My Experience Using IONOS

19MAR2024: Expected End of Service

I thought about writing up my experience using web hosts a couple of times so that I could point people to them if they were interested in my experience with webhosts. The first was HostGator, then IONOS, and today I purchased a year contract with BlueHost. I want to make updates when things happen, rather than just relying on my memory. Sadly, I didn't do that, so I'll just have to do better in the future.
I don't remember much about the purchase process for IONOS. I remember that I tried to do what I always do, which is purchase and then immediately cancel the renewal. That was a train wreck. As I recall, they told me that I could not remove my credit card information from the website unless I sent them a letter in the mail demanding it, or gave them another credit card; if I tried to cancel during the first month, they would refund my purchase and remove my access; every request to cancel was met with demands for justification (I want to cancel. "Why?" Because I do. "Why?"). Eventually I moved the purchase method over to PayPal and then blocked payment there.
Logging into the website was completely irrational. I was constantly asked to do multifactor authentication, either through security question or email confirmation, but if I clicked refresh on the page, it just moves on without getting the confirmation. The webpage was absurdly slow, and it frequently didn't load in the right order, which gave a poor presentation. I didn't need that in a purely utilitarian page, but it didn't promote a lot of confience in them as a service provider.
The bombardment of ads on their page was astonishing. The dashboard had a vertical panel devoted to ads for their products. The landing page when you log in had a banner across the top, but it never loaded in the right order, so the whole page jumped and drew your attention to it. It's that kind of jank that is better at its job even when its broken. As I'm writing this, they have a small notice in the corner that shows they are double billing people and they don't know why.
Clicking on any link showed a loading bar at the top like it's 1993 or something. The entire site was so slow. They had a "webspace explorer" which is like a file manager, just the slowest one you have ever seen. That had an editing tool, which was kinda cool, you could click on a file and edit it in your browser, which is helpful if you just need to fix a stray capital letter or something.
My payment history said the whole thing cost me $12 for the year. If that's true, that was a great price.
In the end, IONOS was plenty frustrating, confusing, and difficult to use. It was low quality in every respect, from product to service. It was also really cheap.
